What is the difference between Academic Leave and Deferment of Studies?

Academic Leave and Deferment of Studies apply to different categories of students.
Academic Leave Deferment of Studies Academic leave applies to students who have already commenced their studies and have completed at least one semester. Deferment of studies applies to new students who wish to postpone the commencement of their studies to a later date. For example, a newly admitted student who is unable to report in September 2026 may request to defer their admission to a subsequent intake, subject to the University's applicable rules.
In simple terms: Deferment is for postponing the start of your studies, while academic leave is for taking a break after you have already commenced your studies. -
Is it possible for a student to defer their studies?

Yes. A newly admitted student may request to defer their studies where there are acceptable and valid reasons, such as medical circumstances, financial constraints or other reasons recognized by the University.
A student may defer their studies for a maximum period of two (2) years.
Important: If a student does not report and resume their studies within the permitted deferment period, the offer of admission may expire and the student may be deemed to have forfeited the offer of admission. -
How do I apply for Deferment of Studies?

Students who wish to defer their studies should complete the University's Deferment of Studies Form.

Submitting the completed form
After completing the form, it can be submitted to the University through any of the following channels:
- Email: academics@kyu.ac.ke
- Through the University's postal address.
- By submitting a hard copy to the Registrar, ARSA Office.
Tip: Students should keep a copy of the completed form and any supporting documents submitted for their records.
